Led by independent orchid researcher and enthusiast Rexy Prakash Chacko, this immersive walk invites guests to slow down, observe, and marvel at the fascinating orchid diversity that defines the UNESCO Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve.
From tiny Hairseed orchids clinging precariously to twigs, to the impressive Tiger Orchid with its large, sugarcane-like stems, every bloom tells a story—a tale of resilience, beauty, and balance within the forest ecosystem. Join us for an inspiring morning walk that promises discovery, learning, and a renewed appreciation for nature’s artistry.
Itinerary
Meeting Point: The Habitat Main Entrance | Session: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (2 hours)
Introduction to Orchids at the Orchid Wall – Begin your journey with an introduction to Penang Hill’s orchid diversity and learn what makes these plants so unique. Touch, smell and marvel at some of the exquisite specimens which grow on the Orchid Wall.
Guided Orchid Discovery Walk – Wander along The Habitat Penang Hill’s nature trail with Rexy as he points out wild orchids growing naturally on rocks, trees, and the forest floor.
Langur Way Canopy Walk – Experience breathtaking views while spotting epiphytic orchids nestled high in the canopy.
Curtis Crest Experience – Step up to the highest vantage point on Penang Island and take in panoramic views while learning about the hill’s botanical history and early orchid research.
Final Orchid Encounters – Continue along the trail and uncover even more of the hill’s floral gems before concluding your walk with a complimentary warm cup of tea.
Meet Your Guide: Rexy Prakash Chacko
An electronic engineer by profession and a naturalist at heart, Rexy’s deep-rooted passion for orchids and hiking led him to uncover the rich orchid diversity of Penang Hill. His research has revealed numerous new records of wild orchid species, expanding scientific understanding of the Hill’s biodiversity. Rexy is also the lead author of Orchids of Penang Hill, a comprehensive guide celebrating the hill’s botanical treasures. His storytelling ability and infectious curiosity make every walk with him an enlightening journey through nature’s hidden beauty.
What’s Blooming on Penang Hill?

Paphiopedilum barbatum Commonly known as the Penang Slipper Orchid, this elegant species is easily recognized by its pouch-shaped lip, making it one of the Hill’s most unique orchids. Native to Penang and surrounding region, it is found on mossy rocks and damp areas of the forest. |

Cymbidium finlaysonianum This graceful orchid often found perched on tree trunks and rocks, produces long, cascading spikes with mildly fragrant flowers. Its greenish-yellow petals and distinct red-and-white lip, make it a captivating sight in the wild. |

Aerides odorata Commonly known as the Fragrant Cat’s Tail Orchid, this species is renowned for its strong, sweet aroma that permeates through the forest during its flowering season. Growing high on tree branches, its spikes bear white, purple-speckled blooms with a distinct horn-shaped lip. |

- Please gather at The Habitat Main Entrance by 09:00 AM.
